Troy (MI) Training Center Creates NUCPS Staff & Command Wall

Troy (MI) Police Training Center is a frequent host to NUCPS School of Police Staff & Command — in fact, it hosts courses so frequently that Class #451 created a Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Staff & Command Wall, similar to the one at NUCPS in Evanston. 

The wall, which also features Class #451's custom class brick, will feature the framed class photos for each SPSC that it hosts. The class brick not only features the names and class challenge coin but also a LED-illuminate "thin blue line."

First Legacy Leadership Scholarship Recipient Selected

As part of every School of Police Staff & Command (SPSC) class, NUCPS encourages each class to leave a legacy. Many SPSC classes raise money for a charity or to donate to a family in need; others work to make improvements in the communities they serve. Class #459 desired an on-going legacy, so it established the Leadership Legacy Scholarship to provide free SPSC tuition to an Illinois law enforcement leader who may otherwise be unable to afford the program. The Leadership Legacy Scholarship Fund awards one free tuition to the Evanston spring term SPSC class (and an additional fall scholarship if money is available) to an Illinois officer who is employed at an agency of 50 or fewer sworn officers.

The inspiration for this fund was McHenry County (IL) Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner (at left), who was killed in the line of duty on March 7, 2019, while serving a search warrant as part of the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force. He had an honorable career, serving in patrol, detectives, narcotics, and eventually the Fugitive Task Force. He was a good leader, and his legacy embodies the principles instilled at SPSC. Good, strong leaders positively influence the future while acting as stewards of history.

First Recipient Selected

In November 2019, SPSC Class #468 selected Sgt. Anthony Prater as the first recipient of the Leadership Legacy Scholarship from among a large pool of applicants. Sgt. Prater serves in the Country Club Hills (IL) Police Department, which has a force of 36 sworn officers. As an officer, Prater has obtained experience and specialized training as a K9 officer, FTO, evidence technician, juvenile officer, and shift commander. He notes that his recent responsibilities expanded to include grant writing, community engagement, program development, procurement, and training. "Unfortunately, our department has been forced to reduce spending and cut training expenses from the budget. Attending the SPSC as a recipient of the scholarship will afford me the opportunity to receive formal training without placing a financial burden on our residents."

As part of the provisions of the scholarship, Prater will be responsible for providing a brief presentation on Deputy Keltner as well as on inspiration for his SPSC class.

Transcript Requests

Transcripts are available to graduates of Supervision of Police Personnel and School of Police Staff & Command ($25 for the first transcript, $5 for each additional transcript, $7 for rush delivery). By federal law, transcripts can be issued to students or to a third party only upon written authorization. Northwestern University's Main Library, which includes the Transportation Library, serves as a continued resource for course graduates, offering public access hours Mondays-Saturdays, from open through 6 pm. You only need a valid photo ID to enter. Visitors can access the library catalog and online resources by using a temporary guest NetID. To borrow items, visitors need to obtain a Borrower's Card.
