Health Informatics

Advanced Graduate Health Informatics Program

The field of health informatics unites information technology with health care to improve patient safety, maximize operational efficiency, and reduce costs. Students enrolled in the fundamentals of health informatics certificate will gain the knowledge in both health care and information technology to further understand the burgeoning field of health informatics. Students will learn from experts in medicine and health information technology who have been instrumental in driving innovate solutions and establishing national health care informatics standards.

Admission for the Health Informatics Program

Applicants to this certificate program must hold a graduate degree from an accredited U.S. college, university or its foreign equivalent. A competitive graduate record that indicates strong academic ability is required. Work or research experience in clinical, computing or information technology fields is highly desirable but not a requirement for admission.

Additional Information

This program is intended for people with a graduate degree and some familiarity with medical or health informatics. Applicants wanting a more comprehensive course of study should consider the Master of Science in Health Informatics degree.

Health Informatics Course Options

To earn a certificate, students must complete the following six courses.

  • CIS 413 - Telecommunications and Computer Networks
  • CIS 417 - Database Systems Design and Implementation
  • MHI 401 - American Health Care System
  • MHI 402 - Introduction to Clinical Thinking

and any two additional MHI courses.

In some cases, students who have completed equivalent coursework previously may be allowed to replace the required course with another course in the field.

Please note that courses completed in the certificate program cannot be transferred to the corresponding graduate degree.
